The largest residential yacht in the world, which will house 39 luxury apartments with prices starting at 9.5 million euros, is being built in Tulcea. The ship will cost a total of 500 million euros and is considered to be the first residential “liner yacht”. The apartments will be available for purchase by invitation only.
The Norwegian group Vard, one of the largest shipbuilders and designers in the world, which also owns the Vard shipyard in Tulcea, announced that it has obtained the contract for the construction of this huge yacht.
Somnio will have a length of 222 meters, 33,500 tons gross register (TRB), and a beam of 27 meters. So it will be the largest yacht in the world “both in length and volume” when it is launched in 2024. Somnio will be 40 meters longer than the current holder of the title of longest yacht, Azzam, owned by the Abu Dhabi royal family.
Somnio, which means “to dream” in Latin, is to be built by Norwegian designer and shipbuilder Vard at a cost of about 500 million euros.
Somnio will have only 39 luxury apartments on board, arranged on 6 floors, and will sail the world according to the wishes of the owners.
Each of the 39 apartments should include “custom features” based on the buyer’s preferences, but will likely be equipped with a gym, a library, and indoor and outdoor dining areas, according to a press release from Winch Design.
Health has also been taken into account, especially in the context of the pandemic, so manufacturers point out that “world-class healthcare” will be available on board.
The apartments on board Somnio will start at 9.5 million euros, with the owners collectively choosing an annual itinerary. The yacht will have restaurants, bars, a wine cellar with a capacity of 10,000 bottles, and a beach club.
“Somnio will be the only residential superyacht in the world and was designed to meet very high standards,” said Captain Erik Bredhe, co-founder of Somnio.
However, the purchase process will be done “by invitation or recommendation only”. A spokesman for the project confirmed to CNN Travel that some apartments have already been booked. The identity of the owners will be kept secret.
The hull and the initial reinforcement will be made at the Vard shipyard in Tulcea, and the yacht will be delivered completed by Vard Søviknes from Norway. Other key players in the project are Vard’s parent company, Fincantieri, Vard Design, and Vard Electro. A wide range of suppliers and contractors from the Norwegian maritime cluster will also be involved in the project. The design of the yacht was designed by Winch Design (USA) and Tillberg Design from Sweden.
