83% of new registrations in the first quarter in Romania are for second hand cars

New registrations of passenger transportation vehicles decreased by 10% in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period last year, according to data published today by the National Institute of Statistics. During the same period, new registrations of vehicles increased by 11.8% compared to the first quarter of the previous year. 83% of the total new registrations are for second-hand vehicles.

In the first quarter of 2021 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2020, new vehicle registrations
for passenger transport registered an increase in the category of mopeds and motorcycles by 6% and decreases in the categories of buses and minibusses by 17.2% and cars by 10.3%. Regarding the new registrations of new road vehicles for passenger transport increased at
mopeds and motorcycles category by 18.6% and decreases in the categories of cars by 25.8% and buses and
minibusses by 6.5%.

With regards to new registrations of road vehicles for the transport of goods, there was an increase in all categories. More precisely: in the category of trailers and semi-trailers there was an increase of 26.2%, in the category of tractors of 25% and in the category of trucks (including road vehicles for special purposes) by 1.8%. New registrations of new road vehicles for the transport of goods increased in the categories of trailers and semi-trailers by 42.4% and tractors by 17.2% and decreased in the category of trucks (including special purpose road vehicles) by 1.6%. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2020, in the first quarter of 2021, new road vehicle registrations decreased by 17.9% for passenger vehicles and increased by 0.6% for vehicles used in the transport of goods.

12% of registered vehicles have non-euro pollution norm

Road vehicles classified in accordance with the European Pollution Standards, registered in circulation, comprised, at the end of the first quarter of 2021, in the proportion of 55.5%, vehicles with pollution norms Euro 4, Euro 5, or Euro 6 and in the proportion of 12, 5%, vehicles with Non-Euro pollution norm. For the cars category, the largest share was held by vehicles complying with the European norm Euro 4, respectively 35.3%; for the category of buses and minibusses the most vehicles, respectively 25.8% were classified in the Euro 3 norm, and for the category mopeds and motorcycles, most vehicles, respectively 31.2% were classified Non-Euro. Vehicles complying with the European Euro 3 norm predominated for the category of trucks in the proportion of 30.7%, those complying with the Euro 5 norm were predominant for the category of tractors in the proportion of 32.6%, while for the category of road vehicles for special purposes most vehicles, respectively 27.1% were classified as Non-Euro norm.

For the first four months of the year, the figures show further declines compared to the prior year. New car registrations in Romania reached the level of 27,624 units in the first four months of the year, a decrease of -14.48% compared to the similar period of 2020, shows the data of the Romanian Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACAROM) and the Manufacturers Association and Automobile Importers (APIA).
