Public transport in Bucharest is become very expensive beginning August 1, both on the subway and on STB. A bus trip will now cost 3 lei, compared to 1.3 lei at present, while the subway trip will reach 3 lei, from 2.5 lei at present. The Bucharest Transport Company and Metrorex explain this increase by the fact that the tariffs have not increased since 2008 and 2014, respectively.

These increases come in the context in which the Ministry of Transport announces that, from August 1, Metrorex and STB harmonize their commercial offer, as a first step towards the integration of public transport in Bucharest and the metropolitan area.

Common tickets now provide 90-minute access to the underground network, along with access to the subway network.

The ticket price will increase as follows:

In the case of STB, a trip, for example, increases from 1.3 lei to 3 lei (or 10 tickets can be purchased for 25 lei). In the case of the subway, the price of a trip increases from 2.5 lei to 3 lei.

A trip by subway or land public transport will cost 3 lei, and a joint STB / Metrorex ticket will be 5 lei.

For the amount of 5 lei, a passenger will benefit from a subway trip and 90 minutes above-ground public transport.

A 24-hour fare will cost 8 lei, and the common STB / Metrorex fare for 24 hours will be 14 lei.

The novelty of the 24 and 72 hour fares is that they will valid for exactly 24 hours from the moment of issue. The notion of “day” fare is eliminated, which, when purchased at 18:00, for example, was valid only for 6 hours of  that “day”.

Both companies also introduce favorable options for companies that want to support their employees to use public transport.

There will be one-month, 6-month and 12-month subscriptions. Their prices will be 80 lei separately for each of the networks (140 lei jointly STB / Metrorex), 400 lei (700 lei jointly STB / Metrorex), respectively 700 lei (1,200 lei jointly STB / Metrorex).

STB notes that this is the first fare price increase since 2008. And on the subway, the last price adjustment was in 2014.

At the same time, according to the two companies, “the additional revenues generated by this measure will be directly reflected in the traveling conditions – through investments that the two companies will be able to make”.
