Romania could have a population of 17.8 million people by 2030 if the current trend of population reduction continues, says Tudorel Andrei, president of the National Institute of Statistics, quoted by Agerpres. Our country would drop from 6th place in the European Union at the moment to 7th place, being overtaken by The Netherlands. Romania’s population on 1 January 2021 was 19,186,201, compared to 20,121,641 in 2011.

“We estimate that in the coming period the population will decrease and on 1 December, which is the critical moment of the census, we will have a population of 19.186 million people, which is almost one million less than the critical moment of the 2011 census. Another interesting fact is that we are currently in 6th place in the European Union if we consider the size of the resident population. If we continue on the same trend, in 2030 we will have 17.8 million people and we will move to 7th place. The  Netherlands will come 6th with 17.9 million people”, said Tudorel Andrei.

According to the data presented, Romania’s population on 1 January 2021 was 19,186,201 people, compared to 20,121,641 people in 2011. Tudorel Andrei said that during this period there has been a change in the weight of the factors that determine the population reduction. Thus, while until 2011 almost 80% of the reduction in the resident population was due to external migration and only 20% to negative natural increase, since 2012 and until last year 60% of the reduction was due to negative natural increase and 40% to migration.

Tudorel Andrei said that 2012 was the year with the lowest number of births, which was matched in 2020.

We also had the most deaths in 2020, not only in the transition period but in a longer period of time.

“2012 is the year in which we had the lowest number of births, a value that has been somewhat matched at the 2020 level. Another interesting aspect concerns the negative natural increase. In 2020 we had the most deaths not only in the transition period but in a long period of time in Romania’s history. But what is happening? In 2012 we had a reduction in population by natural by 60,000 people, and in 2020 we had a reduction by 113,000 people. What happened in 2012? The reduction compared to the previous year was largely due to the reduction in the birth rate, whereas in 2020 the influence of the two factors is divided, so that about 50,000 we have the reduction on the natural way due to the reduction in the number of births compared to the previous year and 50% due to the increase in the number of deaths,” said Tudorel Andrei.

He said that 2019 is on a downward trend in the number of live births in Romania.

“I would like to point out an aspect that is unfortunately totally unfavorable to Romania’s population, and that is the aging of Romania’s population in a relatively short period of 30 years, by an appreciable number of years. The population has aged by almost 7.7 years in 30 years”, said Tudorel Andrei at the event hosted by Hotnews.ro.
