Revenues recorded by the telecom sector in Romania reached 8.4 billion lei (€1.7 billion) in the first half of this year, down by about 1% compared to the same period in 2020, according to data presented by the vice president of the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM), Eduard Lovin and quoted by Agerpres.

Data centralized by the telecom arbiter also shows that mobile telephony still generates the highest percentage of revenues (36%), followed by fixed and mobile internet – with around 33%, TV retransmission (14%), fixed telephony (9%) and other types of networks and services (around 8%).

“In terms of revenues from electronic communications, the top three providers were Orange – with 25% share, Vodafone – with 24% and Telekom Group – with 24%. Here I emphasize that this is strictly revenues from electronic communications networks and services (voice, data), not including other revenues the groups have from IT services, equipment sales or other collateral businesses,” Lovin said.

According to the source, the number of fixed internet connections in Romania reached 5.85 million in the first six months of the year, up 3% compared to the same period last year.

In this context, fixed internet traffic increased by 6% to 5.8 million TB, adding to last year’s increases of over 50%.

“We have an increase in the digitalization of the economy and society in general. The average monthly fixed internet consumption per person reached 50 GB, or almost 1.7 GB per day. 82% of the total number of connections allow speeds exceeding 100 MB/second. Nationally, 7 out of 10 households have fixed internet connections, i.e. 8 out of 10 in urban areas and 6 out of 10 in rural areas. The increase in rural areas, at 6%, is significantly higher than in urban areas at +1%. By number of connections, the top three providers were RCS with 61%, Telekom Group – 17% and Vodafone – 12%”, the ANCOM official pointed out.

In terms of mobile internet, the total number of active connections of 20.5 million in the first six months of this year remained relatively unchanged, with around 70% of these enabling 4G and 5G.

Average monthly traffic was 5.8 GB/user, equivalent to almost 200 MB per day, and the top three providers by number of active connections were: Orange – with 39%, Vodafone – with 25% and RCS – with 20%.

For voice services, the number of active mobile SIM cards in Romania remains constant, while fixed telephony continues to decrease both in terms of number of subscribers and number of access lines.

The number of TV subscribers has also reached 7.8 million, with an increase of around 3%, and cable subscribers account for 77% of the total. At the same time, the number of satellite, DTH or IPTV subscribers has seen a year-on-year decline.

Overall, revenues in the telecom sector saw a slight decrease of about 1% in this half of 2021, totaling 8.4 billion lei (€1.7 billion), Eduard Lovin pointed out.

Professionals, executives and leaders in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector in Romania are participating on Friday in the 18th edition of the Digital Transformation 2021 Gala, an event organized by the Mobile Communications publication, the Digital Transformation Council and Telecom TV.
