86% of the Romanians interviewed consider that their friends and relatives who went to work abroad will spend over 1000 euros on holidays this summer in Romania, according to a recent study conducted by TransferGo. Approximately 20% of respondents say that those close to them in the diaspora and returning this summer will try to make a living in Romania with the savings made during the entire period spent abroad.

Thus, if 60% of those interviewed consider that the budget of Romanians in the diaspora will be between 1000 and 1500 euros, 26% of respondents to the same TransferGo study are even more optimistic, being of the opinion that Romanians abroad will spend even over 2000 euros per family for a stay in Romania this summer.

Moreover, data from the same study show that almost 70% of Romanians surveyed have family members or friends who will return to the country this summer and almost half of them say that friends or relatives have also planned their vacation in Romania upon return to the mother country.

“The return to the country in the summer months of Romanians working abroad, especially in August, is a trend observed annually, both by the Romanian authorities at the country’s borders and by us at TransferGo. As last year was an atypical one, exceptional, due to the restrictions of international circulation, this summer, with the relaxation of these restrictions we are of the opinion that we will see a resumption of this custom and Romanians will come in large numbers to enjoy holidays in the homelands, together with the loved ones and so it is natural to allocate part of the savings made over the year in this regard,“said Marius Nedelcu, Chief Marketing Officer, TransferGo.

According to the study, 43% of Romanians say they have 1-2 family members or friends who will return to Romania this summer, while almost a quarter have more than 3 relatives or friends who have gone abroad that they know will return to the country on summer vacation.

Also, the main reason for returning, say over 80% of Romanians, is the reunion with family and friends left in the country, whom they have not had the opportunity to see for a long time, but 49% of them already know from relatives or acquaintances their diaspora that coming home will coincide with spending the holiday in Romania during this period.

Last but not least, a percentage of approximately 20% of respondents say that those close to them in the diaspora who will return this summer will try to make a living in Romania with the savings made during the entire period spent abroad.

However, almost half of Romanians believe that the diaspora has an overall small or very small financial contribution to the local economy, and 73% of Romanians underestimate the real value of the amounts sent to the country by their compatriots abroad, according to a study commissioned by TransferGo and carried out at the end of 2020.

Locally, TransferGo has been present since 2015, and recently the company reported a 50% increase in cash flow for our country in 2020, as well as an application utilization rate of over 90% for transfers to Romania.
