PSD President Marcel Ciolacu announced on Tuesday that his party wants to introduce a progressive tax rate and that only four EU countries currently have a single rate. He said he would negotiate this chapter with the PNL from Wednesday.
Ciolacu said, in support of the need for a progressive tax rate, that “progressive taxation would look like in the rest of Europe, in all civilized countries. There are only 4 countries with a single rate. We must return to taxing large wealth. There is a huge discrepancy in society between the rich and the poor. In these moments, the Romanian state must intervene. I think that next year we have time to discuss this issue.”
He said that negotiations on taxation will start on Wednesday morning, and Sorin Grindeanu is the coordinator of the PSD negotiating teams.
Florin Cîțu, president of the PNL, also ruled out any tax increase on Tuesday.
Asked whether progressive taxation would also apply to companies, Ciolacu avoided an answer and said “we have a whole year to discuss”.
